SARAH LOVE, EMBLEM OF AUSTRALIAN ROLLER DERBY
It is under the Australian sun that Sarah Love became an iconic roller derby player, proudly wearing the colors of her country. A consuming passion, hours of training, and several medals later, she agreed to answer our questions: an opportunity to discover her beautiful journey.
/Sarah, can you introduce yourself, both as a person and as a skater?
I have always loved roller skating. I put on my first pair at the age of 4. I didn't take them off for a large part of my childhood. I always skated on quad skates or inline skates until my teenage years, without any training until I discovered the roller derby.
/You play on the Australian derby team. Can you tell us about your passion for this sport? Why did you choose this specialty?
Skating has always been my passion. I stopped in adulthood until the day I discovered the playful world of roller derby. I was surrounded by people of all ages skating together. It was at that moment that I realized I was very good at this sport. I trained very hard and had the honor of representing my country, and also playing in division 1 for the VRDL (The Victorian Roller Derby League is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Melbourne, in the Australian state of Victoria.
/What is your best memory in competition? Can you tell us about your achievements?
I had quite an incredible career in roller derby. I have a large collection of medals (from bronze to gold), playing in Division 1. I have many beautiful stories and amazing experiences to share.
We even won gold with the VRDL Allstars at the championships of the WFTDA in 2017 (the biggest Division 1 roller derby championship). My best memory is the 2018 World Cup final. It was an incredible match, very close, against a very talented American team. The fans were on fire, so much energy in that stadium! I love playing these kinds of matches, where every moment counts, every point, every jam, and every high five is precious.
/Do you use your Flaneurz every day? If so, in what way?
I love my Flaneurz. They allow me to skate anywhere while combining style and comfort. I also enjoy the smile on people's faces every time they see my pair of Flaneurz..
/Finally, do you have any advice for someone who might be hesitant to start skating?
Skating is like flying, the sensation is incredible. Overcoming the fear of falling is the fundamental advice I would give to beginners; the reward will definitely come. For my part, wanting to seize life to the fullest, I chose to skate.
